Kangaroo Grass was gathered in wooden bowls. The seeds were separated and grinding stones were used to produce flour mixed with water and cooked to make a damper, high country areas of New South Wales collected them in significant quantities, to grind and bake into cakes. The string was made from the leaves and stems.

Its distribution ranges from Townsville in northern Queensland through to the north-east of Victoria.

In the Dhurug language of Sydney the name means “fishing line”.

Kurrajong is traditionally used by Koori people as a food source and for making rope and twine suitable for the production of strong fishing lines and nets. It is also useful in the making of baskets and other woven goods.

The seeds of the Kurrajong may be eaten when roasted, either ground into a flour or consumed without modification. The flowers and roots may also be eaten. These pods contain highly nutritious yellow seeds, which contain around 18% protein and 25% fat, and high levels of magnesium and zinc.

To eat the seeds, you first must remove toxic yellow hairs surrounding them. They can be eaten raw and roasted, and have a pleasantly nutty flavour. The young roots of this tree also make an excellent food source and can provide water.

Leucadendrons are wonderful and hardy. They’re from South Africa. They’re in the Proteaceae family, like Waratahs, Banksias, Hakeas and Grevilleas which are the Australian branch of the family.

Leucadendron plants are dioecious, meaning they have distinct male and female plants. In female plants, the stem’s bracts surround a central cone-like structure that contains seeds.

Leucadendrons are used as cut flowers for their vibrant colour. The “petals” are actually modified leaves, and when picked at a more mature stage, the central cone is the main feature. Depending on species and cultivar, the flower is presented as a single or multiple flowering stems.

Symbolising riches and long-lasting love, the waxflower is often used in wedding bouquets as exotic-looking filler flowers.

Waxflower are woody evergreen, leaves are tiny to medium sized, and contain oil glands that often give off a pleasant aroma when crushed.

The distinguishing feature of waxflower is its large masses of small flowers. The petals have a waxy feel, which gives rise to the plant’s name.

Aboriginal people and Waxflower:
While the leaves of the plant have been used to flavour food, so far no evidence has been found of the Indigenous use of Geraldton wax flowers as a food. It is the leaf that is used, similar to the way you would use rosemary — you strip the leaf of a wax flower plant, blend it with some oil and a pinch of salt and create a green salsa-verde paste. There are no know medicinal uses for Geraldton Wax but it does contain natural anti-fungal properties that promote wound healing.
